The Quiet Isn't Empty
Psalm 46:10 (NIV)
"Be still, and know that I am God."
Quiet has a way of feeling uncomfortable when you're used to filling it. The silence in the car after you turn off the radio. The first few minutes after the kids are finally asleep. The pause before you reach for your phone out of habit, not need. So often, we treat quiet like an empty space—something to fill quickly, before it asks anything of us.
But the quiet was never meant to be empty. It was meant to be where you meet God.
This verse comes in the middle of a psalm about real upheaval—nations in turmoil, mountains shaking, the earth giving way. It's not written from a place of calm circumstances. It's written into chaos, and into that chaos comes this instruction: be still. Not "wait until things settle down to be still." Be still in the shaking. The stillness isn't a reward for a peaceful season — it's how you find your footing inside an unsteady one.
And the stillness has a purpose: and know that I am God. Not "be still and figure things out.” Not "be still and finally relax." Be still—and know. The knowing comes through the stillness, not around it. It's almost as if the noise we use to fill our days isn't just distraction—it's something that actually keeps us from the knowing this verse is pointing toward.
You don't have to bring an agenda to the quiet. You don't have to use it to solve anything. The instruction is simpler than that and maybe harder: just be still. Let the quiet be quiet. Let it not be a problem to fix but a place to be met.
If the silence has felt heavy or unfamiliar lately, maybe it isn't empty after all. Maybe it's just waiting for you to stop filling it long enough to notice who's already there.
A prayer for today:
Lord, I'm not always comfortable in the quiet—I fill it before I even realize I'm doing it. Today, help me be still without rushing to fix or fill the silence. Let this quiet be a place where I know You more, not a space I need to escape. Meet me here. Amen.
